Sitting here in the swamp, waiting for Eerie to get back from his self-imposed ”sabbatical”, while the Prankster Duo muck around with Mischievous and torment the Swamp Thing and the occasional shambling zombie, I thought I’d share some of my summer reading with you.
Now, granted I really don’t have much time to read lately. Somehow time is a fleeting thing between hunting down my missing muse, who’s taken to hanging with the old guy who like plaid and just bought a sweetly decked out Humvee, trying to keep an eye on the Prankster Duo to make sure they don’t drag zombie parts and hide them in their rooms, and this little pesky thing called…writing. However, Ithought I might share some of my summer reading with you all. We’ll start with Kevin Hearne.
A fine chap located in Flagstaff, Arizona, he just debut his Iron Druid Chronicles with his first book, Hounded. I picked this up at the Pickled Pen bookstore just passed Smokey’s because the cover rocked. To be honest, blonds generally don’t draw me, but maybe it had to do with his sword, whatever it was, I have to say I’m really glad I found this series. I’ve always been facinated with Irish mythology and their pantheon because in the wise words of Obi Wan in Star Wars, “You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.”
Mr. Hearne did a great job in weaving in the foibles of the gods/goddesses and the average non-human enity into entertaining twists, but his main druid, Atticus, is all biting wit and wry humor. It’s a blast to read how Hearne blends the ancient into the modern world, something even some of Atticus’ friends are still trying to figure out. Even with the tats, the sword and the best side kick ever, perhaps this druid could serve as a positive role model for the Prankster Duo. Which might come in handy for the day they piss off the next ancient deity and considering how much success they’ve been having with the Swamp Thing, that time can’t be too far off.
All in all, this is a great series and since I blew through Hounded, Hexed and I’m soon hoping to get Hammered, I’m pretty stoked about continuing down this road with Atticus and company. So if you’re looking for action, a few laughs and don’t mind some twists and turns, I say, pick up Mr. Hearne’s books. You won’t be disappointed.
Until next week all! Happy Fireworks day!
