On today of all days, I wanted to take just a moment to remember all those who were lost on 9/11/01. I also wanted to remember those who rushed to help regardless of the danger to themselves, with only the thought of helping those in need uppermost in their minds.
I was pregnant with my youngest and my oldest was barely a year old when I watched in horrified shock the images streaming across the television from the other side of the country. To this day, I’m not sure I can totally comprehend how a human being could justify such actions against their fellow man. It broke my heart then, and today there are still situations around the world that make my soul bleed.
Yet through the ash and smoke of the rubble of the worst of humanity, I witnessed the best of humanity shine in the grimy faces of people who helped complete strangers struggle through the aftermath. I followed the stories of those who gave selflessly to their neighbors because in that dark time, we needed to know we were there for each other.
So to all of you, remember to count your blessings. Remember to reach out, even when the rush of life seems to sweep you along, reach out and remember what you do echoes through eternity.
