Today I want to welcome debut Urban Fantasy wordsmith, DeAnna Browne. Granted, I may be a bit prejudiced seeing how I’ve been lucky enough to know DeAnna for last few years as a critique partner, but I know I’m not the only one who’s enjoyed this story. For those of us writer folks who’ve done the rounds, we all know how nerve wracking that first release is (okay, granted EVERY release is) and DeAnna has a few words of wisdom to share on what she stumbled into as she faces this exciting, but daunting, event. Remaining Sane, or Moderately Sane as a Author
I’ve often heard that the best thing you can do as a debut author is write the next book. I totally agree. But what no one tells you is while you’re writing your next novel, there is a pile, no more like a mountain, of things needing to be done. There are the social media posts, blog tours, reviews, and the list feels like it never ends. As an author how does one balance the needs of one’s career while feeding your creativity?
I recently listened to Amy Poehler’s book, Yes Please, and I loved how she addresses managing one’s career. She had a whole chapter titled “Treat your Career like your Ex-boyfriend”. In a nutshell, she said treat your career like an ex-boyfriend who sleeps around, and treats you like crap. Don’t obsess over your career, about the sales, or who reviewed who’s book and so on. She says to work your but off, connect to your creativity regularly, and ignore the peanut gallery.
As authors or any artist really, we need to put aside the little things and focus on our craft. Easier said than done, I agree. But I know, when I focus on my art and don’t stress about the little things, my career and my creativity both run more smoothly for me.

DeAnna Browne graduated from Arizona State University with her BS in Psychology. She finds it helps to corral those voices in her mind and put them to paper.
